Information about this photo (Tom Lacombe):
This would be my father-in-law, Toy Taft Cooper (1909-1993), son of Hezekiah and Dora Cooper, in his Chevrolet. I think the tag is 1931, which makes sense.
Toy told me a story about how dry it was in ’31, and when the school year started that Fall, he went around Gooney Manor Loop, to pick up a Grove girl, so as to give her a ride to school. It hadn’t rained for a couple months, and either on the way to or from school, there was a downpour. His canvas top had been dry so long, the water poured through. I doubt that Miss Grove was much impressed.
In the background you can see some power lines, and then some barns on the hill. I’m pretty sure this would be just north of Browntown. Toy’s first name was in honor of an Indian who ran the locust pin factory across the street from my store, and his middle name for the Republican president who was in office when he was born.
